Creators in Concert | Jake Heggie, Composer. “From prelude to curtain, he draws you to the edge of your seat with a theater artist’s deft hand,” Opera News wrote of Jake Heggie, one of today’s most prolific composers of operas, songs, and chamber, choral and orchestral works. A Guggenheim Fellow, Heggie has served as a mentor for Washington National Opera’s American Opera Initiative and is a frequent guest artist at schools and festivals throughout the U.S. and Canada. His first opera, Dead Man Walking, has received more than 40 international productions, and Moby-Dick was telecast throughout the United States as a part of Lincoln Center’s Great Performances. Recent commissions include Great Scott for The Dallas Opera, starring Joyce DiDonato, an a cappella work for The King’s Singers, and a new work based on It’s a Wonderful Life for Houston Grand Opera.

MOHAMMED FAIROUZ : THE DICTATOR’S WIFE 13, 15 Jan 2017
Conductor Nicole Paiement. World Opera Premier.
In this bitingly satirical work, the glamorous yet tormented wife of a once-powerful dictator bemoans that she is now having to answer for all of the terrible atrocities committed by her husband, who has taken to cowering in the bathroom as the country falls apart. Hailed as “an important new artistic voice” (The New York Times), young American composer-on-the-rise Mohammed Fairouz and prominent Pakistani writer/librettist Mohammed Hanif–whose collaborative opera Bhutto has just been selected for a world premiere at Pittsburgh Opera–will develop this new production based on Hanif’s critically acclaimed play of the same title. The Dictator’s Wife will be conducted by Nicole Paiement (WNO’s The Little Prince).
Performance Timing: 1 hour, with no intermission.
