MET Costume Institute GALA 2018 Theme ‘Fashion&Religion’ — & It Might Be Controversial

The 2018 Met Gala will take place on Monday 7 May at its usual location at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The event – which first began back in 1948 – is now one of the most glamorous on the A-list calendar and often dubbed ‘the Oscars of fashion’.With only a few months to go until the red carpet is rolled out and with the theme already revealed, we are rounding up everything we have gleaned so far about the biggest night on the fashion calendar.

Costume Institute Spring 2018 Exhibition

MET Costume Institute GALA 2018 Theme ‘Fashion&Religion’ will be the focus of this year’s exhibit and gala, according to multiple sources. The museum has not officially confirmed the news yet, but the idea for the project reportedly came about well before the current exhibit, “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: The Art of the In-Between” opened.

Many designers including Dolce & Gabbana, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Jeremy Scott have referenced religion in their collections over the years, which means there’s a vast array of religious-inspired looks to potentially be curated.

According to WWD’s sources, the exhibition is still in the early stages of planning, but it will be a “serious and ambitious” project. This means the Met Gala red carpet will follow suit, which should prove interesting for the tricky, potentially controversial theme. MET Costume Institute GALA 2018 Theme ‘Fashion&Religion’.

MET Costume Institute GALA 2018 Theme ‘Fashion&Religion’. Just like a prayer, we can often feel fashion’s power. And we trust that it will take us there (if only to rack up those likes on our latest outfit ‘gram). The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute is apparently keeping the faith, too, and is rumored to be further exploring the connection between the two: According to Women’s Wear Daily, planning is in the very early stages for what will be a fashion and religion-themed exhibit, an idea that’s reportedly been in the works long before its current exhibit, “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: The Art of the In-Between,” went on view.

Luckily, there won’t be shortage of inspired pieces for curator Andrew Bolton to pull from: Designers like Jean Paul Gaultier, Christopher Kane, and Dolce & Gabbana have each referenced religion in their collections. The latter, specifically, isn’t one to to shy away from its Catholic roots: It’s used crosses, Madonnas, and other Biblical iconography in much of its work.

A History of the Met Gala in 60 Seconds:

MET Costume Institute GALA 2018 Theme ‘Fashion&Religion’.If this exhibit does actually come to fruition, we’re excited to see how some of our favorite celebrities tackle the theme on the First Monday in May at the Met Gala. Seriously: Can’t you already picture how literal the designer tributes would be? Here’s hoping Rihanna — whose reign as queen of the red carpet has yet to disappoint — comes dressed as the high priestess of fashion she already is, and that appropriation of religious imagery is far and few between.
We asked The Metropolitan Museum of Art for more information and were told, “We have no comment as we have not yet announced The Costume Institute spring 2018 exhibition and gala, but will be sure to let you know when we do.

BEHIND THE SCENES: The Met Gala 2017- Getting Ready, Walking the Carpet, and Celebrity Interviews:

MET Costume Institute GALA 2018 Theme ‘Fashion&Religion’. The event is expected to be as star-studded as ever, with a Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons theme (being referred to as an “Avant-garde” theme for those clueless in the world of designer fashion) that’s sure to inspire over-the-top outfits costing thousands upon thousands.

But what many forget about the Met Gala is that its more than just a red carpet wonderland — It’s, you know, an actual gala that you can buy actual tickets for.

So, think you can just splurge on a ticket after a few months of saving and land yourself a seat next to Beyonce and the Kardashians?

Let’s start with ticket price. Have an extra $30,000 lying around? Great, you’re in luck!

But if you want to sit with a group of your closest friends who also happen to have a spare $30,000 to blow on a night out, it’ll cost you $275,000.

Claire Danes’ dress the brightest star at Met Gala:

First, you’ll need a top-of-the-line outfit that plays into the year’s theme, (Past themes have included “Punk: Chaos to Couture” and”China: Through the Looking Glass”) of course.

And whether you’re male or female, you better believe you’ll have to be groomed in much more than your Sunday best — so let’s factor in expenses for your hairstylist, make up artist, aesthetician for things such as nails and waxing and of course, accessories — Whether it’s diamonds for days or cufflinks that stun.

Lastly, you’re going to have to figure out how you’re getting there and back — and no, a standard yellow cab or Uber isn’t going to work for an event of this caliber.

Met Gala 2015: All the best looks in under 3 minutes:

When all is said and done, according to Refinery29, we’re looking at an estimated total of $62, 215 for what might (actually for that price, better be) end up being the best night of your life.
