A new co-production with Vanishing Point Lliam Paterson : The Eighth Door
Bartók’s beautiful, mysterious opera is staged in collaboration with visionary Scottish theatre company Vanishing Point, and directed by its founder Matthew Lenton. Making full use of his talent for visually compelling storytelling, Bluebeard is presented alongside The 8th Door, a new music theatre work he has co-created with Scottish Opera Composer in Residence Lliam Paterson. They explore the ‘before’ of Bluebeard’s gruesome story – creating an ambitious double bill to enthral and intrigue.
‘Bluebeard was very innovative for its day; what better way to complement it than to create an equally ground-breaking piece for our own era?’
Matthew Lenton & Lliam Paterson
The music of Bluebeard contrasts the powerful intimacy of just two singers with huge orchestral forces – delivering a wealth of textures and soundscapes, from the spine-tingling to the truly unsettling. Internationally acclaimed stars Karen Cargill and Robert Hayward sing Judith and Bluebeard. Sian Edwards (The Rake’s Progress 2012) conducts both works.
